Why My 5AM Routine Made Me a Better Consultant

I’ve never believed in magic formulas.
But I do believe in discipline, intention, and the quiet power of doing hard things consistently.

My 5AM routine wasn’t something I adopted because it was fashionable.
It wasn’t part of a productivity experiment.
And it definitely didn’t start because I’m a natural morning person.

It began because I needed more space.
Space to think.
Space to learn.
Space to prepare for the day instead of reacting to it.
Space to be the leader, parent, and consultant I wanted to be — not the one squeezed into the leftover hours.

5AM gave me that space.
And it changed more than my mornings — it changed me.

Starting Before the World Wakes Up

There’s something powerful about being awake before everything else — before emails start flying, before meetings queue up, before demands appear.

At 5AM:

  • the house is quiet

  • the world feels still

  • your mind isn’t yet cluttered

  • there’s no noise, no pressure, no competing priorities

For the first time in years, I wasn’t rushing.
I was starting, deliberately and calmly.

That shift alone transformed my day.

Reflection First — Not Last

Instead of reflection being something I squeezed in at the end of a hectic day (or skipped), it became the first intentional act of my morning.

I used that time to:

  • plan my day

  • review my goals

  • think through complex problems without pressure

  • refine strategies I was building for clients

  • reconnect with what mattered

  • reflect on how I wanted to show up as a leader

The clarity from those sessions carried directly into my work.
Conversations became sharper.
Strategy became cleaner.
Decisions became calmer.

I wasn’t reacting anymore.
I was directing.

Learning Without Distraction

I use part of my 5AM block to learn — whether it’s progressing my CMI Chartered Manager assessment, working toward my BCS Fellowship, or deepening my craft.

No interruptions.
No split focus.
Just deep, meaningful learning.

It’s incredible how much you can absorb when your mind is free from noise.

I became sharper in my consultancy work because I was actively investing in myself — not “when I had time,” but because I made time.

The Fitness Shift I Didn’t Expect

Then there’s the exercise.

Some mornings it’s swimming.
Some mornings it’s the Wahoo Kickr Core and a structured indoor ride.
Some mornings it’s a road cycle.

What started as a discipline became a necessity.
I think better when I move.
I lead better when I’m healthy.
I handle stress better when I train.

Fitness stopped being something I “should” do.
It became part of how I perform.

The Unexpected Change at Home

Funnily enough, one of the biggest benefits wasn’t professional — it was personal.

By starting my day early, I became:

  • more present

  • more patient

  • more helpful

  • more connected

I had the space to help with the morning routine.
To be there for my wife and daughter without rushing or stress.
To check in with my older children, even if just with a short message.
To start the day with intention rather than chaos.

The 5AM routine strengthened my relationships.
It improved the atmosphere at home.
It made mornings calmer and evenings easier.

I didn’t expect that.
But it became one of the most meaningful outcomes.

What 5AM Taught Me

1. Discipline builds freedom

The more structured my start, the more freedom I had later in the day.

2. Calm is a competitive advantage

Entering the working day centred and clear made me a better consultant, leader, and problem solver.

3. Small daily consistency beats occasional intensity

You don’t need big changes.
You need steady, deliberate steps.

4. Reflection creates direction

Thinking first means leading better.
It means designing your day, not reacting to it.

5. Personal growth strengthens professional performance

Every part of my life — consulting, parenting, leadership, health — is better because of those early hours.

Looking Back

The 5AM routine isn’t about waking up early.
It’s about taking control of the only part of the day that truly belongs to you.

It made me:

  • clearer

  • healthier

  • calmer

  • more intentional

  • better prepared

  • more connected

  • and genuinely better at my job

It reshaped my performance as a consultant more than any course, tool, or framework ever has.

5AM didn’t just change my mornings.
It changed my leadership.
It changed my relationships.
It changed my life.

And I’d recommend it to anyone — not because it’s easy, but because it’s worth it.
