Integration Beats Innovation

Issue #11 16 March 2026

Business & Technology Insight

The conversation around hybrid working has matured significantly since the pandemic. Most organisations have settled into patterns that work for them, but the technology implications are still playing out. This week I've been helping a client rethink their collaboration tools strategy. The key insight: it's not about having the best individual tools, it's about having tools that work together seamlessly. A best-in-class video conferencing tool that doesn't integrate with your document management or project tracking creates friction that erodes the very productivity gains it's supposed to deliver. Integration and workflow coherence matter more than individual feature sets.

What I Learnt This Week

This week I was reminded that scope creep doesn't always come from the client — sometimes it comes from within the delivery team. Well-intentioned team members adding 'just one more thing' or 'improving' something beyond what was agreed can be just as damaging as client-driven scope changes. Good project management means protecting scope in all directions.

Something Personal

I've started a practice of writing three things I'm grateful for at the end of each working day. It sounds like a cliché, but it genuinely shifts perspective from what went wrong to what went right. On the toughest days, it's a reminder that there's always something positive to acknowledge, even if it's simply that you showed up and did your best.

Tool of the Week

Linear — a project management tool designed for speed and simplicity. I've been testing it as an alternative to more complex tools like Jira, and the experience is refreshing. Clean interface, keyboard shortcuts for everything, and sensible defaults that mean you spend less time configuring the tool and more time actually managing work.

This Week's Challenge

This week's challenge: audit your tool stack. How many apps do you use daily? Which ones genuinely add value, and which are just habit? Consider whether consolidating to fewer, better-integrated tools would improve your productivity.

Quote of the Week

"Efficiency is doing things right; effectiveness is doing the right things." — Peter Drucker
