The Best Solution Nobody Bought

Issue #7 16 February 2026

Business & Technology Insight

Stakeholder management is one of those skills that every project manager claims to have but few truly master. This week I observed a perfectly good technical solution fail to gain traction because the team hadn't invested in understanding the political landscape. The technical work was excellent, but the people with the power to approve the next phase didn't feel heard or involved. The lesson is timeless: you can build the best solution in the world, but if you haven't brought the right people on the journey with you, it won't matter. Stakeholder management isn't a soft skill — it's a critical success factor for every project.

What I Learnt This Week

I learnt this week that the most productive meetings are the ones with the clearest purpose. I attended a meeting that had no agenda, no defined outcome, and no time limit. It lasted 90 minutes and achieved nothing. In contrast, I ran a 25-minute session with a clear objective, structured discussion, and defined next actions. The difference in output was enormous.

Something Personal

I've been making a conscious effort to disconnect from screens in the evening. No email after 7pm, phone in another room. It felt uncomfortable at first — what if something urgent comes in? — but nothing has been truly urgent, and the quality of my evenings has improved dramatically. Presence matters, both at work and at home.

Tool of the Week

Grammarly — not just for catching typos. I've been using the premium version to improve the clarity and tone of client communications. Its suggestions for simplifying complex sentences and adjusting formality have genuinely improved the quality of my written deliverables. Good writing is a competitive advantage in consulting.

This Week's Challenge

This week's challenge: before your next meeting, write down the single most important outcome you want from it. Share it at the start of the meeting. Notice how it changes the quality of the discussion.

Quote of the Week

"The art of communication is the language of leadership." — James Humes
